EL PASO, Texas – University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC), in partnership with PAM Health Rehabilitative Hospital, are enhancing rehabilitative services for the borderland with the introduction of two state-of-the-art robots. (Link to high-definition video demo here)
The Balo Dynamic Standing Frame and Tigo Motor-assisted Cycling Trainer by Thera Trainer can assist in the rehabilitation of patients who are recovering from a stroke, orthopedic surgery or an accident.
With the use of virtual gaming software, the Balo Dynamic Standing Frame is able to aid in strengthening patients’ balance, coordination, and sensory re-introduction. A patient is strapped into the frame and faces a screen with virtual therapeutic gaming. The shock absorbers on the frame help patients shift their body weight in order to maneuverer the game, without the risk of falling.
The Tigo Motor-assisted Cycling Trainer can be used with a chair or wheelchair to facilitate movement of the upper and lower extremities and improve motor skills. This training device allows patients with limited mobility to exercise with assistance from the robotic features on the pedals.
A year ago, UMC and PAM Health entered into a joint venture sharing ownership of an inpatient rehabilitation hospital located at 1600 East Cliff Drive in Central El Paso. This partnership added a new service line for UMC, which previously only offered outpatient rehabilitative services.
“In addition to a wide-range of comprehensive programs, UMC patients will now have access to rehabilitative equipment that can only be found at PAM Health,” said Jacob Cintron, President and CEO of UMC El Paso. “We are consistently looking for ways to improve the lives of patients who are recovering from strokes, amputations, and orthopedic surgeries. We listen to their needs and believe the introduction of these robots will allow us to serve all patients, no matter their condition or ability to move.”
PAM Health has seen 355 rehabilitation patients since the joint venture began with UMC.
“We are delighted with the success of our partnership with UMC and thrilled to offer new, innovative technology that will help with the rehabilitation of patients of all abilities in our community. The integration of the Balo and Tigo systems provides more options for our therapists as they prepare treatment plans for patients who suffer from a wide-range of illnesses or injuries. We will continue to bring the most advanced equipment available to elevate the level of care our patients receive,” said Jarrod McGee, CEO of PAM Health El Paso Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital
