EL PASO, Texas – University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) has again received the highest recognition possible from the American Heart Association.

This year, UMC received the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Achievement awards for Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll, Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll and Stroke Advanced Therapy Honor Roll.

The award is given to comprehensive stroke centers that are able to achieve the highest level of quality metrics involving patient care and timing of treatments. Qualifications for the award were based on data compiled from January 2021 to December 2023.

According to the American Heart Association, every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke or heart attack, and heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States, respectively. Studies show patients can recover better when providers consistently follow treatment guidelines.

UMC’s recognition for excellence in stroke care is due to our advanced Neurosciences Department, our only team of neuro-critical care board-certified neurologists and interventional neurologists who manage our many services relating to stroke care and neurological injuries, such as the Mobile Stroke Unit.

“This award is a reflection of the dedicated professionals we have working in our neurosciences department at UMC,” said Carla Escobar, Admin. Dir. of UMC’s Neuro Program. “Strokes are far too common in our community, which is why we strive to always look for ways to improve and maintain high standards. The attention our team gives to patient care is unmatched.”

With our team of experts, a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment and state-of-the-art equipment, we are able to provide life-saving stroke care to the El Paso community and residents throughout west Texas and Southern New Mexico.
